Could music have the power to transform lives – even from inside prison walls?

Songs Inside follows a unique rehabilitation program that connects a small group of incarcerated women with music, offering a pathway to healing, self-expression and hope.

This sensitively told, award-winning feature-length documentary explores what music can bring to a place like prison: joy, vulnerability, pain, and forgiveness – often all at once.

“You just forget where you are and then get in touch with the person that you are on the inside.”

More than a film, Songs Inside challenges deeply held assumptions about incarcerated women. It centres their voices, honours their humanity, and invites audiences to reconsider how Australia’s justice system responds to trauma and rehabilitation. In doing so, it has become a catalyst for broader conversations and advocacy around systemic change.

Songs Inside will premiere on ABC TV at 8pm on 22 December, 2025.
