Mozart’s Sister: The story of Maria-Anna, a child prodigy forgotten to time

“The idea that geniuses develop on their own is a myth.”

Supported by Minderoo Pictures – the Foundation’s social impact filmmaking enterprise – this powerful film explores the fascinating theory that Maria-Anna Mozart played a larger role in her brother’s music than is previously known.

Like her younger brother, Maria-Anna Mozart was a keyboard genius from an early age and the siblings toured Europe performing as wunderkinder to royalty.

But when she reached 15, societal norms compelled her to retire.

“Just the thought of having another Mozart, it blew my mind. I thought, why do we not talk about her?”

Using recreations and expert interviews, Director Madeleine Hetherton-Miau turns our gaze towards the unrecognised female creators of our time.

“92% of the repertoire is composed by men. If we don’t encourage women now, it repeats.”
